Hungary sues EU over Russian energy ban

Hungary has filed a lawsuit with the European Court of Justice to challenge and annul the REPowerEU regulation, which bans the import of Russian energy resources to European Union (EU) countries.

1news.media informs that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó posted this on his page on the X social network.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister said that the ban on the import of energy resources can only be applied within the framework of sanctions requiring unanimous approval: "In this case, the regulation was adopted under the guise of a trade policy measure."

According to him, the EU treaties clearly state that each member state independently determines the choice of energy sources and suppliers.

P. Szijjártó stressed that this decision violates the principle of energy solidarity, which is intended to ensure the security of energy supply for all EU countries.

"Alternatives are more expensive and less reliable. It is impossible to ensure energy security and keep energy prices low for Hungarian citizens without Russian oil and gas," he wrote.

Recall that on January 26, 2026, the 27 EU member states officially adopted a regulation on the gradual cessation of imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia by the end of 2027.
