A Burundian footballer has died after choking during a match.

According to reports, the player had placed a coin in his mouth as part of a local ritual, but the metal coin became lodged in his throat, blocking his airway.
Medical staff provided on-field assistance, but Gerik died en route to the hospital.
The federation has not yet disclosed the exact cause of death.
