Swedish government to present its largest budget intiaties package for 2026

The Swedish government plans to present a record-high reform budget this year amounting to 80 billion kronor (7.4 billion US dollars). According to Swedenherald.

This figure marks the largest amount in the country’s history, excluding the pandemic years.

Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson explains the size of the budget by stressing the need to revive the economy under recessionary conditions. The main focus targets support for households. The plan includes significant tax cuts for families, workers, and businesses.

“We will focus most on families and hardworking people so that they can feel confidence in the future” says Elisabeth Svantesson (The Moderate Party) at a press conference at Harpsund.

The opposition criticizes the government. The Social Democrats believe the cabinet has lost control over the economy and risks leaving behind another deficit.

The Center Party states that the government lacks a clear strategy to reduce unemployment, stimulate economic growth, and cut emissions. Martin Ådahl , the Center Party's spokesperson adds: “The impression is that they are panicking and throwing out an election pork barrel budget. They are throwing money around without having any strategy”

To finance the reform package, the state will borrow part of the funds. However, Svantesson insists that this approach is natural under recession conditions and complies with budgetary rules. “I feel that this is a well-balanced budget. It will make a difference for people all over Sweden”, claims the Minister of Finance.

This budget will be the last for the current government before the elections. Many observers view it as an attempt by the authorities to strengthen their position among voters.
