Organ donation in Bulgaria gives three Romanian patients second chance at life
An organ donation in Bulgaria's Pirogov Hospital has given three patients in Romania a second chance at life, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported citing the Medical Supervision Executive Agency (MSEA) .
The donation became possible on June 24 after the relatives of a 42-year-old woman made the noble decision to donate her organs, the MSEA added. The procedure was coordinated by a team at Pirogov Hospital, led by Dr. Kiril Penchev. Due to medical considerations and the absence of compatible recipients in Bulgaria, the donated liver and two kidneys were provided to Romania under a bilateral agreement.
The Ministry of Health and the Medical Supervision Executive Agency expressed their “sincere condolences to the donor's relatives and deep gratitude and respect for their noble decision made at an incredibly difficult time - one that saved lives.” “We also express our gratitude to the teams of the medical institutions,” the Agency added.
On June 5, a liver transplant gave a 49-year-old man a chance at life. The surgery was carried out at the Military Medical Academy after an organ donation at the Nikola Vasiliev Hospital in Kyustendil, the MSEA said.
