Russian activists attack Polish ambassador in St Petersburg

Krzysztof Krajewski, Poland's Ambassador to Russia, was attacked in Russia's St Petersburg when he arrived in the city to meet with the local Polish community.

1news.media informs, citing Ukrainska Pravda, Maciej Wewior, spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry, said the attack on Krajewski took place on Sunday 16 November.

Gazeta Wyborcza reports that the incident occurred when the ambassador arrived in the Russian city to meet local Poles on the occasion of Poland's Independence Day.

Around midday, as Krajewski walked with the consul to a Polish church service at the Basilica of St Catherine of Alexandria, he was surrounded by an aggressive group of Russian "activists".

They held signs bearing anti-Polish and anti-Ukrainian slogans and attacked the ambassador because Poland supports Ukraine.

"At first, these were verbal insults, but then there was a clear attempt to use physical force. At that point, the ambassador's security intervened," Wewior said.

The spokesperson noted that Krajewski did not suffer serious injuries.
