From fighters jets to Russian oil, here's what we heard from Trump and Erdogan

Trump and Erdogan are now holding private talks at the White House. But before going behind closed doors, the pair addressed the media in the Oval Office. Here's a reminder of what we heard:

  • Trump began by repeating his false claim that the 2020 US election was rigged, and gesturing to Erdogan said, "he knows about rigged elections better than anybody"
  • On Russian oil, the US president said he would like to see Turkey - a Nato member - to stop buying it while the war in Ukraine continues
  • Erdogan said the leaders plan to discuss the sale of American-made F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, and Trump later agreed, saying: "I think he'll be successful in buying the things he'd like to buy"
  • Asked if he will lift US sanctions on Turkey, Trump said he would "almost immediately" do so if they have a good meeting today
  • On Gaza, Trump said he believed "we're close to getting some kind of a deal done", particularly after having discussed the situation with leaders of Middle East nations at the UN earlier this week
